Magazine Basic Review

Magazine themes should basically: display illustrated excerpts on a homepage with read more links to various single post pages,

Looking for a fine magazine theme Magazine Basic is the best theme I could find.

First to mention is the responsive display on all platforms thanks to the 12 column grid layout.

Great plus is the flexibility in the home page display in 1, 2 or 3 columns.

A bit of a problem is that the theme is not basic at all: in spite of its name, it is very elaborated in details.

In my opinion in a basic theme should better not

  • use google fonts in stead of standard fonts;
  • shape read more links;
  • change standard editor style;
  • change standard excerpt length;
  • use complex css for pagination style;
  • use extra css for link styling;
  • use extra css for sticky post;
  • change the look of post comments and 404 pages;

and more so that it would be more easy to adapt styles in a child theme.

It would really be nice to have a truely basic version of this magazine theme.

Magazine Basic Update not child friendly

Update 3.0.5 of the nice Magazine Basic theme published in august 2015 proves to be child unfriendly.

After installing this update one will be confronted with as series of fatal errors so one will be forced to recode the child as well. This is not the idea behind using a child to make adaptations to a theme.

At the moment I am still working on the adaptation of Compact Magazine. This child can be seen in use at

First thing I found so far is unnecessary  renaming functions called mb to bavotasan:

mb_theme_options( ‘excerpt_content’ ) into:

As I work along, I will keep you informed. I opened a topic at WordPress Support

Magazine Basic Child

Magazine Basic is the parent theme of Compact Magazine.

A bit of a problem is that this parent theme is not basic at all.

In spite of its name, it is very elaborated in detail.

In the making of a child theme I found there were many things I wanted different (often more basic) and as I went along, were really complex to change.

It would be a nice idea to have Magazine Basic in a really basic form and thus more easy to adapt according to the wishes of the creator of a child theme.

Among many pro’s of the Magazine Basic theme: it is very flexible; it has a responsive layout using a grid of 12 columns; adaptations of the grid in the front page are easily customized.

Magazine formaat

Artikel over Excerpts in plaats van Full Posts in het WP-thema Twenty Thirteen; mogelijk ook toepasbaar in andere thema’s.

WordPress Twenty Thirteen Theme Post Excerpts in Home, Category, Tag, Author and Archive Pages.

 * The adaptations template for displaying content
 * Used for both single and index/archive/search.
 * @package WordPress
 * @subpackage Twenty_Thirteen
 * @since Twenty Thirteen 1.0
<!--Magazine style: illustrated excerpts rather then full posts-->
<?php if ( is_search() || is_home() || is_category () || is_author() || is_tag() || is_archive() ) : ?>
 <div class= "excerpt">
 <?php the_post_thumbnail('thumbnail'); ?>
 <div class="entry-excerpt">
 <a href="<?php the_permalink(); ?>" title="<?php the_title_attribute(); ?>" ></a>
 <h2><a href="<?php the_permalink() ?>" rel="bookmark" title="Permanent Link to <?php the_title(); ?>">
 <?php the_title(); ?>
 <?php the_excerpt(); ?>
 </div><!-- .entry-excerpt -->
 <?php else : ?>
 <div class="entry-content">
 <?php the_content( __( 'Continue reading <span class="meta-nav">→</span>', 'twentythirteen' ) ); ?>
 <?php wp_link_pages( array( 'before' => '<div class="page-links"><span class="page-links-title">' . __( 'Pages:', 'twentythirteen' ) . '</span>', 'after' => '</div>', 'link_before' => '<span>', 'link_after' => '</span>' ) ); ?>
 </div><!-- .entry-content -->
 <?php endif; ?>
